Pittsburgh Restaurant Week!

Pittsburgh Restaurant Week is next week! (January 16-22) Most major cities make a big deal out of Restaurant Week, but Pittsburgh’s has struggled through the last few years to get noticed.  This year, they’ve got a lot of great restaurants signed up!   Looking at my schedule next week, I’m probably not going to make it out for any of the specials.  If I were able to, these would be my picks:

Alma Pan-Latin Kitchen 

Alma is the new Regent Square based project of Jamie Wallace, who also owns Abay Ethiopian Cuisine.  I love his story– big firm lawyer who sloughed off the golden handcuffs to follow his passion and open a restaurant.  (Personally, I get bored of cooking after about 2 hours, so opening a restaurant would be the wrong career move.)

Alma’s special for Restaurant Week:

Fixed Menu Price: $25
First Course Appetizer (choice of one):
Sweet potato and ginger soup with cinnamon-spiced yogurt
Mixed baby greens and mango with chili vinaigrette
Main Course (choice of one):
Ropa vieja with pigeon peas and savory rice
Grilled pork tenderloin topped with cilantro and jalapeno alongside white sweet potato puree
Fig and date rice with assorted seasonal vegetables, tagine sauce, and collard greens
Fresh fish of the day
Dessert Course (choice of one):
Chocolate tres leches
Fresh fruit sorbet

Kaleidoscope Cafe

Kaleidoscope Cafe is a new addition to Lawrenceville.  It’s gotten good press, and best of all, it’s BYOB!  Pittsburgh is sorely lacking in BYOB places (offhand I can only think of maybe 5 places).   I’m not entirely clear on it’s cuisine–I think it’s comfort food/American…Munch from the Post Gazette describes it as having “simply good food.”  It doesn’t matter so much to me how the Cafe classifies its dishes, it’s new, it’s supposed to be good, and I can bring my own wine. That’s good enough for me!

Kaleidoscope Cafe hasn’t posted their Restaurant Week specials yet, so stay tuned.

Toast! Kitchen and Wine Bar

I love food, I love wine, Toast! has both of those and is hardly a new establishment, how have I not been there yet? A tasting menu with wine pairing is a standard find on this Bloomfield establishment’s menu.  I always have trouble deciding what to order, so tasting menus are perfect.  Also, they offer shrimp and grits! Tasty!

Their Restaurant Week special is a discount on the tasting menu ($30 each, instead of $40) and wine pairing ($20 each, instead of $25)

Verde Mexican Kitchen & Cantina

Verde is a brand new addition to the Garfield neighborhood.  Pittsburgh’s sorely lacking in good Mexican food, and I have high hopes for Verde.

They’re offering a special Price Fixe menu for Restaurant Week:
