Pittsburgh Restaurants Where You Will Probably Get Yelled At, But It’s Totally Worth It

25 Jan

Family run dining establishments don’t have time for your foolishness!  Nor do they have time for your credit cards! (all of them are cash only)  They do however know how to put together a delicious meal at a great price.  You’ll probably get an earful at any of these Pittsburgh favorites, but the attitude is part of the charm.  The food’s well worth it, too!

1.  Tram’s Kitchen

You better know what you want to want, because these folks do NOT have the time to linger while you make your decision.  Lucky for you, it’s hard to make a bad pick at Tram’s.

2. Zorba’s

Do NOT talk on your cell phone when in line, and CASH ONLY!  ….but try the grilled chicken salad, it’s one of my absolute favorite lunches (it even comes topped with melty cheese and fries)

3. Apollo Cafe

You better know what you want, because the line moves quickly and the staff isn’t patient. (You want an egg & cheese breakfast sandwich with potatoes. Believe me.)

4.  Pamela’s

No we will NOT seat you before your whole party has arrived. No, we will NOT even put your name on the list.  Get everyone here, then we’ll talk.  Luckily the gruff folks are just doing crowd control.  Once you get in, the waitresses are extra sweet, and the strawberry hotcakes are legendary.

Is there anywhere else where you might have to take a yelling, but can expect a good meal?

It’s Greek To Me in Brookline. I’ve gotten yelled at for not eating the olives (I make sure I do EVERY TIME now), and you will probably also overhear tg husband and wife owners yelling at each other. So worth it.

Hot Metal Diner in West Mifflin. Berating the customers and being “snarky” is kind of their schtick

      Wasnt finished, stupid phone!

Anyway, that’s kind of their schtick and it gets Pamela-type crowded, but I don’t think it’s worth it. It just annoyed me more than anything.

Henry’s mom used to waitress most of her life and she was apparently the super brash loud-mouth type you see in sit-coms, but people loved it. Every time I see that commercial where the guy is like “I didn’t want mayo on this” & the waitress scrapes it off the bun on the side of the table, it always makes me think of her!

I’ve driven by Hot Metal Diner and have wanted to go there. I’ll have to try it out.
My husband LOVES Greek food so we’ll have to visit It’s Greek To Me (he hates olives but I LOVE them, so I’ll eat all the olives for him).

Not sure if this counts, but if you purchase cheese or meat at Penn Mac, you’d better have an encyclopedic knowledge of cheese or meat, or there will be much distress.

The only time I’ve been brave enough to order cheese at PennMac was when I was there at some weird off time and the store was empty and there was a young friendly looking lad behind the counter. I picked something that sounded interesting off the cheese sign but it was SOLD OUT! Lucky for me, he patiently provided recommendations. Phew.
