Mindless Movie Fun

11 Jul

We watch a lot of movies in this house.  Sometimes we pick movies that we don’t even know much about, they just happen to be new video releases, and we’ve watched all the other new releases already.  Sometimes this is a waste of hours (see: John Carter), but other times our low/no expectations are rewarded with a film that is very enjoyable.  Some of my recent favorites have been:

What to Expect When You’re Expecting

So this one I actually saw at the drive-in, not on DVD.  And I actually actively did NOT want to see this film.  However, by the time we made our drive-in trip, I STILL had not seen the Hunger Games, and this was the film preceding it in the double feature.  I found What to Expect to be really really funny, and there were a lot of humorous things i could relate to from my own pregnancy.  It’s a shame that this film fizzled into obscurity so quickly, because it really was enjoyable.

21 Jump Street

I never saw the original 21 Jump Street, and the previews for this film didn’t really catch my attention.  I was out for a walk, and was listening to a Filmspotting podcast.  The hosts mentioned that they really enjoyed the film, which is enough to convince me.  Even when films are funny, I usually don’t laugh out loud.  There were several el-oh-el moments with this film, though.

Real Steel

I keep calling this “Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots,” because that is really what this movie is.  It is, to borrow a description from one of my coworkers, Rocky with Robots.  There is a little side story about an estranged father who is reunited with his son under tragic circumstances, just to pull on a few heartstrings.  It’s not a cinematic masterpiece, but it IS a lot of fun to watch robots smash the nuts and bolts off each other.  (Relatedly, I can’t believe I missed the Toughman contest in Wheeling this year!!  There is truly nothing like watching amateur West Virginia fighters knock each other into next week, and the crowd is twice as entertaining!)

Aw, we can go to Toughman again next year! We will have to buy tickets like normal people though. All my leads are fizzled out.
